Description

You've likely already got a photo of the Red Baron. It's the Chinese junk with the deep red sails that people shoot from the beach on Koh Samui, usually without realising they could have been aboard. Twice a week it runs out to Ang Thong.

We were a group of ten friends celebrating and the Red Baron was the perfect choice - it's spacious enough for a group, the bar means you can have a drink without being on a dry boat, and the atmosphere of a proper sailing junk is just more fun. The breakfast and lunch were both good - the BBQ at lunch was a highlight. Guide Ton was great company all day. The emerald lake was the visual standout of the park. Sailing back in the evening light was beautiful and we arrived back at Samui feeling like we'd had a proper adventure.

I expected a typical tourist boat trip and got something quite different - the Red Baron has a real character to it. The guide Ton was excellent, knowledgeable and relaxed. The viewpoint hike was tough in the heat but the panorama at the top over the 42 islands was genuinely spectacular.

The emerald lake and the viewpoint are stunning and the Red Baron is the most relaxing way to get to them.

The sailing yacht adds something that a speedboat never can - a real sense of occasion and pace.

  1. Pickup from your hotel or villa

    Pickup window08:00–08:30

Our driver will pick you up at your hotel or villa between 08:00 and 08:30, depending on your location. The air conditioned van will take you to the north shore of Koh Samui from where the Red Baron leaves to Angthong Marine Park.

  2. The tour guides await you on the pier with a welcome drink. Red Baron leaves at around 08:30 and on board you will enjoy a rich breakfast. There is no need to have breakfast at the hotel prior to departure.

  3. The boat takes around 1,5 hours to Angthong National Marine Park. On the way you can enjoy the breakfast and free coffee, tea, water and soft drinks. Relax on board and enjoy the beautiful scenery while we make our way to the first stop: Wua Ta Lap.

  4. We arrive at Wua Ta Lap. This island has an amazing viewpoint at 500 meters high, from where the 42 islands can be seen. You might see some monkeys on the way! If you want, you can also stay on the beach and enjoy snorkeling or sunbathing.

  5. At lunchtime we enjoy a traditional Thai lunch combined with delicious BBQ dishes.

  6. The Red Baron brings us to beautiful Mae Ko island. Here we will explore the Emerald Lake, a green naturally formed lake in a crater. The salt water gives it its distinct green color. A number of stairs and walkways lets you visit the top of the crater to see the beautiful surroundings. On the beach you can enjoy snorkeling and swimming.

  7. At 17:00 it’s time to leave beautiful Angthong Marine Park. It takes about 1.5 hours to sail back and on the way you can slowly see the sun setting behind the horizon. Enjoy a refreshing drink, wine, beer or cocktail from the bar and make sure to make some photos on the way!

  8. Drop-off window18:30–19:00

We arrive back at the pier in the north of Koh Samui. Our air conditioned minivans are awaiting you for the return transfer to your hotel or villa. You should be back home no later than 19:00.

A long, unhurried day of roughly ten hours, sailing Wednesdays and Saturdays from about 08:30 to 19:00. Pickup, then a 90-minute sail out of the northern pier with breakfast served on the way. At the park it's the Emerald Lagoon viewpoint, the Wua Talap beach and climb, and swimming, spread across an afternoon that refuses to hurry. Lunch is on board. The sail home in late light is the part people book it twice for.

FAQs

In the morning, we serve a continental breakfast on board. Think of bread, eggs, jams, fruits and coffee & tea. During lunch there will be a delicious Thai-style lunch buffet with different Thai curries, noodle dishes and rice. If you have any food allergies, please let us know.

Anyone who is in a reasonably good shape can make the way up to the viewpoint. It is best to wear sturdy shoes or trainers for the trip up, but fit people will be able to do it on flip flops as well. Please note that the hike uphill is not suitable for pregnant women, small children and elderly persons with existing conditions.

The best time to visit Angthong Marine Park is just after the rainy season between February and March. The temperatures are pleasant: blue skies and calm waters (apart from a rare weather disruption). The months of April and May are sunny and hot, while the summer is a bit cooler. Angthong Marine park is closed yearly during most of the rainy season, between 1 November and 15 December.
